It’s times like this that I wish I had a web comic.
Last night, one of my friends shared this experience from a library conference: He was at a Video Games in the Library workshop and afterwards he decided to network. He approached another librarian and introduced himself.
The other guy said, “I like to ask some preliminary questions to make sure I have something in common with people before I dedicate time to having a conversation with them. Do you know the names of the three elven rings?”
My friends said it had been a while since he read the Lord of the Rings and bailed.
Of course, now I wonder if he missed having the best conversation ever.

I can remember Narya and that’s about it off hand. Wow, I should start beginning my conversations that way: I can’t talk to you unless you can tell me the difference between and RTS and TBS game. LoL

I would have countered with, “do you know the name of the thing your aunt gave you which you don’t know what it is”? (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – Infocom)

I am going to start using that tactic. It’s brilliant really. ;)
