Death Race, the remake of the 1975 film Death Race 2000, will be hitting theatres on August 22, 2008. The new movie recently reminded Kotaku of the original movie’s controversial arcade game.
Yes, this game with its almost cave painting-esque graphics was controversial. Drudging through the archives, I found this article from The New York Times about the fiasco.

It makes you wonder what games will be like in 30 years. What will make GTA and Spore Porn look tame? Full frontal in every game?

I think immersion will be the next threshold. There’s a disconnect between pressing a button on a controller and stabbing someone vs making stabbing motions with a motion sensitive controller.

I played that “death race” game when it came out.. a huge letdown. I think there was an electonic “scream” when the people/zombies died that sounded like someone dropping a bowling ball on a Moog synthesizer.
