Sure it isn't without its flaws, but as a whole it is astounding. I do not want to ruin anything for other players by promoting the plot but needless to say what I have done of the main story is good but it is the environment that really shines. There are severe differences involving this and oblivion, apart from the obvious these are mostly to do with the character generation/improvement. These imposed limitations do enhance the game rather than limit it. I foresee multiple plays through on this as already I have made choices in game that radically affect later events. The VATS system is motivating and once you really get to grips with it as your character gets better it can be very effective where as early on it seems next to useless. It is very fulfilling seeing a heavily armored brother of steel have his flame thrower fly out of his hands. Also the basic execution takes elements of call of duty, for far better exactness you need to aim down the barrel of your gun rather than just point and shoot. The graphics are very good but the character animation seems a bit stiff in comparison to say gears of war or fable but that doesn't affect the game play in the slightest.
Back to the comparisons with oblivion, I would actually say this has more in common with Morrowind (the previous elder scrolls game on original xbox and PC) the game is less forgiving than oblivion and has a much more bleak and oppressive feel. Well worth checking out, even for non RPG fans.
